The white gold caseback can be opened via an extra-thin “secret” cover punctuated by side apertures that let air through, dynamically boosting sound amplification when the watch sits on the wrist. To optimize the flow of energy and prevent stopping when all functions are active, the caliber relies on a custom oscillator with increased amplitude premiered in 2022 on the RD#3 models, while the base movement energy is increased to prolong autonomy when off the wrist.

The technical layout of the perpetual calendar has been meticulously organized to occupy minimal architectural space. Building upon the technical milestones of Calibre 5133 and the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin RD#2 prototype, Calibre 1000 merges the calendar functions onto a single, continuous horizontal level. The end-of-the-month cam is seamlessly integrated into the date wheel, while the month cam is combined directly with the month wheel. Enhancing its astronomical allure is an innovative moon phase system that conveys a highly realistic depiction of the lunar cycle. Two concentric discs printed with six different moon positions interact to form ten individual images that faithfully represent the transitory stages between the New and Full Moon, flanked by a large date display and a dedicated year indication window.

Multi-Planar 18-Carat White Gold Geometry & The Intuitive ‘Super-Crown’

The physical housing of the Universelle represents a profound achievement in ergonomics, featuring a multi-layered 18-carat white gold profile measuring 42 mm in diameter and 15.6 mm in thickness. A true interface innovation is the ‘Super-crown’, which enables both forwards and backwards correction of the month, automatically returning to its neutral position after a rotation in either direction while concealing a highly technical mechanical security system to completely prevent misuse. Elevating its precision capabilities is the classic split-seconds flyback chronograph complication, marrying precision and synchrony by allowing the user to restart the chronograph instantly via the flyback mechanism without stopping it first, while the split-seconds hand enables the precise measurement of intermediate time intervals.
